Benefits of Worksite Wellness

For many companies, medical costs consume at least half of their corporate profits. Some employers look to cost sharing, cost shifting, managed health care plans, risk rating, and cash-based incentives to cut medical costs. These methods merely provide a shift in costs. Only worksite health promotion stands out as the long-term answer for keeping employees well in the first place (WELCOA, 2010).

Recent research on worksite wellness has linked poor health to higher health care costs, and low productivity (presenteeism), high absenteeism, and high rates of injury and disability. Worksite wellness programs can address these issues by creating a positive environment that is conducive to health and offers programs that help employees in improving their health status.

To achieve these improvements, an organization needs to support their wellness program across all levels, from the top down and bottom up (Leading by Example, 2005).

Benefits of worksite wellness include:

  • Improved health status of employees
  • Improved productivity
  • Reduced absenteeism
  • Increased presenteeism
  • Reduced employee turnover
  • Increase in employee morale
